a teabag over the eye

April 26, 2007

Not the shingles eye, but the one that now has a sty on the inside of the lower lid. Applying a hot teabag is supposed to help.

Wearing my usual contact lens is impossible. Getting used to glasses again is a slow process since the world looks very different without much peripheral vision. Straight-ahead vision is not bad, but tough when taking photos.

But now I can do something useful with all that tea I didn’t like.

birds, mirrors and creme eggs

April 24, 2007

bird poop

As an experiment, I removed one of the plastic bags protecting my rear-view mirrors from the constant onslaught of little birds who ferociously attack their own images. As I was doing so, I thought I heard a loud territorial sound coming from said birds, but I could have been imagining things.

They really have better things to do, as in caring for their nestlings who could perish from hunger while Pop is distracted. Maybe I should slip a few creme eggs into their nests.

dinner and a movie: The Good Shepherd Marries Mrs. Smith

April 19, 2007

It could have been a completely different movie, one that would have had Edward taking his glasses off, and paying more attention to his wife.

‘Are you going to save the world, Edward?’, she asked demurely, checking her ammo. ‘Let me help you.’ Little did Edward know he was also married to Lara Croft as well, who would have livened up those tired Skull and Bones dinners a bit.

And the kid. He would have turned out differently too, if only they’d given Angelina a chance.

Shrimp patties, mashed potatoes and sugar snap peas. Thank goodness they were eaten before the torture scene, which I managed to skip almost in its entirety.

wilfing: now there’s a name for it

April 14, 2007

Some call it browsing. Others might say drifting or wandering. But getting lost on the internet is now known as ‘What was I Looking For’ or ‘wilfing’, and we all know what that’s like.

Why, just now I was shopping for camera memory, and here I am at the Telegraph in the UK reading about Prince William and his ex-girlfriend. Isn’t that what makes the web fun?

the durian undergoes a makeover

April 11, 2007

A Thai researcher has created a durian without the offensive odor. His next goal is a durian without the formidable spikes. Not everyone, however, is thrilled with his improved product.

not a typical Easter story

April 9, 2007

But it does involve rabbits. Giant German rabbits that yield up to 15 lb of meat each. A breeder sold 12 to a possible North Korean breeding farm.

Alas. The original breeder now fears the worst.

dinner and a movie, Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker

In the last six months, I’ve seen more movie torture than in many years past. It seems that my definition of ‘torture’ may differ from other family members’. Any scene involving a whip and bloody lash marks qualifies for me. Normally I don’t have a plate of food in hand if beatings are expected. But I knew little of this movie. A few minutes in, I started remembering, but apparently I only saw less than half once upon a time.

Braised pork with potatoes and other veggies make a fine dinner, even the leftovers. There are several scenes where even the most wondrous food has to be put aside. But such a gorgeously filmed movie otherwise.

silk-dyed Easter eggs

 silk dyed easter eggs

Not quite what we expected, we’ll know what to do next time. When the other guy is home.

pre-Easter

April 7, 2007

One of us moved to Seattle. One of us is sick with a bad cold. Two of us didn’t really want to mess with Easter eggs tonight, missing one of the more critical elements all these years, the family member in the Pacific NW.

But the silk dye method sounded fairly simple, kind of a do-it-all-in-one pot kind of thing. And this year, I actually have an enamel pot.

Plus I have a box of old scarves from going through my mom’s and sister’s things. We spent a bit of time cutting up and wrapping, then left the eggs to cook. In less than 30 minutes, we had a pot full of wrapped mysteries. The other family member found he couldn’t wait till the eggs cooled off. Results will be revealed tomorrow. Look at the clock, it’s way past my bedtime.

out of the ether

April 5, 2007

On my way home this afternoon, I was thinking I should pick up something for my friend who brought over a plant and some homemade muffins last week to cheer me up. I’m still not quite over the shingles, and cheeriness had been in short supply.

But when I got home, I headed straight for the kitchen and the pre-browned pork from yesterday. In the middle of chopping up onions and potatoes, I thought I really should pick up the phone and at least thank her. Family members wandered in and out, and the phone rang. Guess who.

This happens with a cousin as well. But it never ever occurs when I need to communicate with a kid of mine.

dinner and a movie, A Scanner Darkly

April 4, 2007

I should pay more attention when one of my kids tells me a movie is ’strange’. There I sat with my Wendy’s steak sandwich and fries (all I managed to do with the planned dinner was brown the pork roast pieces).

If you haven’t seen it, this is not a movie to dine by, at least the first few minutes. I only watched about half because I have to work tonight. But I’ll get back to it, fascinating stuff.

urban doorbells

urban doorbells and graffiti

One of the few pictures that was exposed right yesterday. Taken shortly after we got one of the last parking places in the city.

It’s odd how the graffiti ends where it does. It looks fresher than the doorbells.
