the second-hand bookstore on Castro

December 9, 2005

It’s a good source for used movies, which now take up all the wall space near the bathrooms. But I didn’t find any I had to have.

In the physics section, I was peacefully minding my own business, looking at the bottom row, when this guy moved into my space. This seldom happens here where the aisles are so narrow. But there he was, about two inches to my left, effectively blocking my ability to pull out books.

When this happens at the library (and women do this too), I sigh and move on, coming back later. But this fellow was just an arrogant jerk. I got up, and started pulling out oversized books just a hair shy of the back of his knees. He did move, but not much.

That was because he was hindered by his supreme arrogant jerkiness.

late rose

December rose

A minor miracle, seeing as how the squirrels dig up most of my attempts at starting plants from cuttings. Since I fail so often, I don’t note the names of the roses. This looks similar to one I already have, although it could be one from a bunch bought at the farmers’ market. The plant looks a bit leggy, which could mean it’s a Medallion from my mom’s yard.

It has brown edges, but for a rose in December, I’ll take what’s given. like a gift.

turkey and stuffing ice cream

More countries are getting into the savory ice cream flavor market. Earlier, we mentioned Taiwan and Japan, where buyers prefer seafood flavors.

Now a shop in Wales is featuring tastes the average ice cream lover has never encountered in a frozen concoction. At Heavenly Ice Cream in Llandeilo, the chef will create any flavor the customer requests within 48 hours.

Among the offerings: garlic mushroom, baked beans, and the aforementioned Thanksgiving special.

Incidentally, if the turkey flavor is something you really can’t get enough of, the Jones soda packaging of several Thanksgiving flavors is marked way down at Target.

decking a tree

It’s difficult when you’re short, and the tree is surrounded by a mass of vinca and honeysuckle that hides the holes into which a convalescing ankle can sink. If the hip-high vinca won’t get you, the clinging honeysuckle will, and failing that, the long strings of lights can be treacherous.

Other than that, it was fun.

deer cull in Scotland

Because of the high number of deer-related accidents, marksmen will be participating in a cull along one of central Scotland’s main roads.

storms on the moon

They occur along the terminator (where night meets day on the moon), and go from pole to pole, according to scientists.

Disturbances on the moon have been reported by observers in the past, but were routinely dismissed.

jumping from roof to roof

Most of us won’t have to outrun bad guys in our lifetimes, but you never know. And if you’re caught in such a situation, pick your roofs carefully, allowing for the build-up to the speed necessary for launching yourself.

This is not The Matrix. (This is dangerous. )

turkish delight, or not

Once, a long time ago, I tried some, and have not touched it since. I may have lost a baby tooth in the process. More than one, even.

Mallomars and pastry shells

At one of the grocery stores, there’s a big display of Mallomars, which I’ve never had. But after reading this, I must, must at least try some.

Pre-cooked pastry shells, also featured at this store, are nice to have around for the holidays. Lately, around 6:00 p.m., I stare into the fridge, and realize all my energy has taken a sharp dive southward. Even if I had the pastry shells, I would probably have to eat them straight out of the box, unadorned. Which would be worse than that pot pie last night, hard as that might seem.

Maybe I could put two Mallomars in each shell.

shopping for candy

Two of my recipients have special needs this year, one is married to someone with a severely restricted diet (no fat, sugar or salt), the other is eliminating chocolate for medical reasons.

At Target last night, Choxies, their highly-rated new chocolate line, were everywhere. There were velvety stockings with brownie mix inside. Large, heavy (bad for mailing) canisters filled with cocoa mix. In other words, it was a bad place if you weren’t looking for chocolate. There were big gaps on the shelves where the Lindt white chocolate truffles had been. Those would have gone in my own candy jar.

I did find some Aplets and Cotlets. But for the rest of their Christmas packages, I’ll have to roll up my sleeves, and do some baking.

acupuncture research

A doctor looks into at how acupuncture needles work, and finds some surprises.

Although acupuncture helps relieve the symptoms of many illnesses, there has not been a lot of research into how it works.
