After studying aerial photographs of the Xanadu (Shangdu) site, archaeologists say they have a better idea of key parts of the capital built by Kublai Khan. Marco Polo reported seeing opulent marble palaces there.
Sadly there is little left of the ‘pleasure dome’ within ‘twice five miles of fertile ground’.
