the lost toddler, the coyotes, and the police

October 5, 2005

The police and volunteer searchers could hear coyotes calling to one another the way they do when they are homing in on a creature in distress. They began tracking the animals, and sure enough, found two coyotes at the site where the child was hiding under a fallen tree. Young Tristram Webber is now safe at home.

watch out for flying silver carp

They can jump 20 feet high, and are spooked by boat motors, the sound of boots on aluminum boats, and researchers, who use garbage can lids and cookie sheets as shields. Those who are hit are not amused. Because the fish can weigh up to 60 lbs, the victims can be flattened. One researcher lost a filling in a tooth after a silver carp hit him on the side of the head.

Originally introduced into a fish farm pond, the silver carp, aka asian carp and the bighead carp has moved on to the Mississipi River, Kentucky waterways, the Illinois River, the Missouri River, the Ohio River, and threatening the Great Lakes.

at the pie section

At Costco’s tonight, we made our way to the bakery goods. A somewhat dazed-looking man was standing in front of the pies, staring from one giant pie to another. (’I want one, but they’re so big. I really want one, but how can I finish. I want one, but my wife will kill me, I want one.’) When I saw that there were peach pies, I reached in for one. The man looked up and asked, ‘Ah, you are buying - have you bought before?’

Oh yes. Once or twice. Yes, they’re quite good. He nodded, and got one of his very own. Maybe his wife will kill him. But she doesn’t have to eat any if she doesn’t want to.

python vs. alligator photo

Yes! I knew someone would have it. The unfortunate repast of the Burmese python in gruesome detail from sfgate.

Usually these stories are buried (I know where to find them) as secondary items, but sfgate proudly features it on their front page.

photographic coasters

After reading about Generate via Popgadget, I looked through their ‘little things’ section, which has nifty things like these delicious coasters.

Burmese python vs. six-ft alligator

No one will ever know what really happened. The body of the python was found with a ruptured stomach, and the alligator’s hind legs and tail were sticking out of it.

The head of the python is missing.

Was that a really mean alligator, lashing out as it went down? How did the python swallow the alligator’s head? Will there be a check of the alligator’s stomach contents? Did the python grossly misjudge its abilities to ingest?

There’s never a video when there should be one.

Togo: schoolgirls must shave heads

State schools decreed that Togolese girls are spending too much time on their hair and not their studies. They were sent home this week to be shorn.

Is this a bit extreme?

chronic wasting disease: deer and elk tongues

Animal researchers have determined that the tongues of deer and elk contain prions, the infectious agent of chronic wasting disease. Before, the method by which one animal infected another has been an unknown.

When one animal licks another, or grazes near another, the infection passes easily from their tongues through saliva.

The disease is found in twelve states and two Canadian provinces. It is related to mad cow disease and sheep scrapie.

vineyards and CO2 emissions

An Italian study shows that vineyards absorb a surprising amount of carbon dioxide emissions. One hectare of vineyards will absorb about 3 tons of CO2 per year. A equal amount of forest absorbs 4.5 tons.

coding: the Russian method of alcohol treatment

It has elements of fear and the power of suggestion. Mostly fear. Success is somewhat mixed, as Russian drinkers turn to chat rooms to discuss the flaws of coding.

Each year, more than 50,000 people die of alcohol poisoning in Russia.

Good Guys closing

Driving down El Camino the other day, I noticed a Good Guys looked desolate and dark. Now comes news that they will all be closed within the year.

Two hybrid megastores in San Mateo and SF Stonestown that combined Good Guys and CompUSA will stay open.

Florida: drenching expected from Tammy

As Tropical Storm Tammy forms off Florida’s east coast, forecasters do not expect it to grow to hurricane strength. Up to four inches of rain might fall.
