woman with 300 cats

July 12, 2005

Of that number, 86 were dead, but were still in the house. These stories seem to be fairly common - sometimes it’s a mix of animals, sometimes all cats . Like most, I wonder if the owners lost their sense of smell long ago.

But mostly, I wonder, how did they deal with the fleas? Were there flea beards? Did they dose each cat with flea control meds? Not if there were feral cats mixed in.

And cats in the walls. I can’t quite get my mind around that.

male voice vs. female voice

In a study that tested only men, scientists say that a woman’s voice triggers activity in one section of the brain, while a man’s voice activates a completely different part.

In addition, they shed light on the mystery of why people who ‘hear voices’ tend to hear only men.

a few of my favorite things

a few of my favorite things

It’s hard to get a picture of ice cream on a hot night.

I chose Dreyer’s Fudge Tracks Light. The man in front of me in the checkout got two pints of Haagen-Daz, didn’t see the flavors. He looked like someone who commutes regularly to and from work on a bike, as in ultra-thin. If that’s the case, on a day like this, he deserved to eat both, straight out of the cartons.

really, really short summer: school supplies

Last week, I did a double take at the drugstore when I saw the aisles of ball point pens, binders, and filler paper on display. So, back-to-school sales now start right after the 4th?

loretta eats a caterpillar

Or what’s left of it. She wasn’t too keen at first, but got into it with remarkable efficiency. Yes, that is a napkin underneath, but I made the mess trying to spear the caterpillar, which had been eating my purple petunias about a minute ago.

Loretta lost part of a leg, and cannot balance well, making it very difficult to go after food, although she still strikes at it. I impale the item, and she takes it from there. Mantises regenerate limbs, except for the front two, so we have high hopes.

musical hallucinations

The dj in some people’s heads is very active. In a recent study, researchers found that of a group who experienced involuntary music , a third had hearing problems, and more women than men complained of the disturbance.

The music heard varied from religious to show tunes to children’s songs.

Argentine ant beard

Not a beard exactly, but a profusion of ants on some part of the body. Every year, I either lean on a post that is a major artery of ant travel, or step into a patch of grass during ant rush hour. The next time, I might just turn the hose on myself.

the McDonald’s diet

On Sunday, I had a Big Mac for the first time in over a year. I’d forgotten how much bread can be in one sandwich, and that took care of my carb allowance for the day, pretty much.

But apparently, if you’re careful, and you have a digestive system that can handle it, you might be able lose weight on nothing but McDonald’s.

I’m going to guess that the salads play a major role in this die.

not your grandpa’s soapbox car

But then your grandpa didn’t get to race his at Laguna Seca, nor did he have to blow $30,000. And he sure as heck didn’t go up to 70 mph .

Parkinson’s drug causes compulsive gambling

In patients taking dopamine agonists, some begin gambling within six months, with predictable results in their financial situations. Scientists report that once the treatment is stopped, the gambling urge is gone. Patients taking these drugs and their families should take note.

Was this drug tested on animals first? It gives a whole new dimension to those pictures of dogs playing poker.

black-headed bird

black-headed bird

For weeks now, it has fiercely guarded a nest in the ivy groundcover outside the window where I work. Almost every day, I drag the hose past it, taking great care not to sprinkle in the vicinity, or I risk the irate calling of both parents.
