night walk

March 2, 2005

Walking at night is not for the faint of heart. Around here, cars speed merrily along, and drivers do not see us. At Christmas, after some near catastrophes, I asked for one of these , and got a flashing red light for my arm too.

On a good night, the fragrance of supper wafts out to us as we pass. Sometimes, supper has been burned, but sometimes, it smells like meat loaf and potatoes.

For the Bay Area, that is. Although if you have a backyard with a few overgrown trees, you could just step outside. But it helps if you are quiet.

You’ll need QuickTime to see these. I’ve only had a chance to check Einstein’s Dilemma and The Wreck of the Dumaru.

All that cooking over the weekend does pay off. With asparagus on the side.

Is it possible to eat this at the computer? You bet. But there comes a time when disjointing must occur to fully appreciate the meatiness of the bird. At this point, work must be temporarily put aside.

fried egg sandwich

The egg itself should be slightly runny, since part of the yolk will be used to moisten one slice of bread. Mayonnaise (Best brand, here on the west coast) can be applied to the other, as liberally or as daintily as you like. The egg white will also be as you prefer, either a bit crisp around the edges or carefully cooked to a uniform doneness. The bread could be the soft, white kind common to childhood, or the multi-grained adult variety. No other condiments or embellishments are needed, other than a sprinkle of salt.

With the first bite, egg will ooze out all the sides, which is to be expected. It is almost impossible to eat this sandwich without licking your fingers, thereby making it one of the foods not recommended for eating at the keyboard.

Like peanut butter sandwiches, it is best made at home.
